Research is changing as we know. Gone are the specific classification of vessels and their costs. Instead you will be researching the following:

Scout Squadron
Frigate Squadron
Destroyer Squadron
Cruiser Squadron
etc etc...

A squadron will encompass more than 1 vessel (usually) these are built in the same way that you build your ships now, however you get a whole bunch of vessels for that price.

THe main change here an this is still being playtested is the MK1 and Mk2 variations.

To explain i am working on the cheaper Mk1 types being classed as invasion or raiding fleet, fleets that can basically take on planets and move into opposing systems. Initially at the lower classification of squadrons (Scout, frigate, destroyer etc) they will be weaker but that will change as you research new squadron types. The bad side of this is they are fairly weak, but the good side... their cheap to construct and you could have alot of attackb squadrons. The Mk2 versions of these are the bigger badder and more frightening ships, cruiser, battleships and more are available, even at early scout squadron and onward these Mk2 variations of the Mk1 counterpart are extremely deadly. So why built anything but Mk2, well Mk2 are going to be defensive vessels, limited to their own empire space and able to move swiftly within such areas.

You may think... awwww i want big cruiser in my invasion/raiding fleet!!! do not despair as you advance down the research channels of Mk1 you will gain bigger and more powerful variants of your empires vessels that can be used to frighten and terrify your opponents.

So that's some food for thought. still working out the bugs, just needs some more playtesting still.

I'm not sure where you're going with this one Q? Is there a reason MKII will be only used for defence, and consist of the bigger ships?

gotta agree with the big C here Q. Whats the point of anything the more industrious of us have done?
Kinda feels like we're being stiffed Sad
actually edit: i definately feel like i've been stiffed. Not sure what other empires have been up to except building shed loads of mk1 scouts, But i've been busy on a lot of fronts ,was looking forward to seeing it come to fruition, But if its just gonna descend into basic stats and lose the RP then i know where this is goin, the details . although some ignored them, are what makes this game unique!

I don't know the system you're using for the ships and I'm guessing this is the source of the problem. If there is a big variety of ships what is you got rid of MkI and MkII idea altogether as it doesn't seem to 'fit' the new system? Some ships could be short range and some long range. The more powerful variants of each class would invariably be the short range and the longer ranged vessels the less powerful types (due to space needed for the supplies, capacty to repair, etc)?
There could also a extra cost not factored in for longrange vessels to factor in their ability to move/travel in an inlimited range.

As for research, you could simply allow empires to repick/allocate the reseach they've used already on the new designs?

OKay not the best response, but understood.

I want to use the Star trek online foundry to simulate the space battles, so this does mean that some squadrons researched will have to be multiple ships, Cruiser and Battlecruiser is only 1 ship in a squadron. However they are fairly bad ass. Alone though they may be in trouble when outnumbers by faster smaller ships.

In regards to Mk 1 and Mk2 squadron variation we do not have too designate Defensive or Offensive it was merely an idea and based on the romulans post i can see its a little annoying to have all those lovely Mk2 vessels become empire bound and unable to enjoy a little marauding.

So in effect we will ignore the offensive/defensive fleets suggestion.

I will however have to change the research listings again slightly to reflect more accurately what you already have access too. ill post that shortly.

Research options are going to stay the same now. My computer cannot deal with video capture and its proving a nightmare, combine that with the fact we all like the options we have we may as well stay with what we have. Smile
